80's Christian Dior Gia Sunglasses Museum Piece

80's Christian Dior ad featuring Gia Carangi

Gia Marie Carangi (January 29, 1960 – November 18, 1986) was an American fashion model during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Carangi is considered by some to be the first supermodel, although that title has been applied to others, including Janice Dickinson, Dorian Leigh, and Jean Shrimpton.
Carangi was featured on the cover of fashion magazines, including the April 1979 edition of British Vogue, the April 1979 and August 1980 editions of Vogue Paris, the August 1980 edition of American Vogue, the January 1981 edition of Vogue Italia, and several issues of Cosmopolitan between 1979 and 1982.

After she became addicted to heroin, Carangi's modeling career rapidly declined. She later contracted HIV, which suddenly claimed her life at the age of 26. Her death was not widely publicized and few people in the fashion industry knew of it. Carangi is thought to be one of the first famous women to die of AIDS. Gia, a            biographical film starring Angelina Jolie, debuted on HBO in 1998.

Eskimo Sunglasses

eskimo sunglasses 204mp-2-2013

Snow goggles (Inuktitut; ilgaak or iggaak, syllabics; ᐃᓪᒑᒃ or ᐃᒡᒑᒃ) are a type of eyewear traditionally used by the Inuit people of the Arctic to prevent snow blindness. The goggles are traditionally made of a piece of bone or ivory pierced with slits but new ones may be made with wood.
The goggles fit tightly against the face so that the only light entering is through the slits. Soot was sometimes used on the inside to help cut down on glare. The slit is made narrow not only to reduce the amount of light entering but also to improve the visual acuity. The greater the width of the slits the larger the field of view.
Andre Courrege brought this idea to high fashion in the 60's in a plastic molded version and spawned ideas for different shapes incorporating the same ideals to different styles.  Cateye Spectacles has one of the wrapped versions on window display now.  Made in Italy, this simple frame actually fits better than the Courrege.

Secretary Of State Kissinger frame 1975

The Liberty Optical "Fortune" frame 1975

 Henry Kissinger

German-born American writer, political scientist, diplomat, and businessman. A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, he served as National Security Advisor and later concurrently as Secretary of State in the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon  and Gerald Ford. After his term, his opinion was still sought by some subsequent US presidents and other world leaders.

A proponent of Realpolitik, Kissinger played a prominent role in United States foreign policy between 1969 and 1977. During this period, he pioneered the policy of détente with the Soviet Union, orchestrated the opening of relations with the People's Republic of China, and negotiated the Paris Peace Accords, ending American involvement in the Vietnam War. Various American policies of that era remain controversial today.
Cateye Spectacles has the authentic mint dead stock Liberty Fortune in stock now.

Searching for "Sugar Man" on Valentines Day

Imagine that everyone is going crazy over your music that you wrote decades ago and believes that you are dead.  This is the story of the folk singer Sixto Rodriguez.  Sixto grew up in Detroit, Michigan, the sixth child of Mexican immigrant parents. (Hence his name)  In the late 60's he released a single I'll Slip Away and was signed to Sussex Records around 1970.  He released two LP's with Sussex Records;  Cold Fact in 1970 and Coming From Reality in 1971.  After poor sales of these two LP's in the US, he was dropped from the Sussex label and Sussex subsequently folded.  It was 1975 and Sixto had almost finished his next LP before being dropped.  He ended up giving up his music and working different industry jobs around Detroit.

Meanwhile, in different parts of the world, his music had gained following in Australia, New Zealand, Botswana and Rhodesia.  After most copies of his work were sold out in the late 70's, an Australian record company, Blue Goose, purchased all of his back catalogue and released some LP's.  Sixto ended up touring in Australia around 1979 and then returned to his normal life back in Detroit.  Somehow after this time people began to believe he had died because a title of one of the Blue Goose albums was Alive.

In 1991, both of his albums were released for the first time in South Africa and the legend of his death continued.  One of the albums actually went platinum and his music became an anti-apartheid anthem there.  Despite having a huge following in this country, Sixto had no idea this was happening.  It was only in 1998 when his daughter discovered a website devoted to him in South Africa, did he realize how much of a legend he actually was.  The motion picture Searching For Sugarman was released last year to much acclaim and won an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2013.  Cateye Spectacles has some inventory that evokes a Sixto style in stock shown below.
